Exploring Impressionist Brushstrokes

4th-grade artists learned about the impressionist movement! They looked at the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. They noticed the monochromatic color scheme used in many of his paintings coupled with his distinct painting style. Through discussion, they discovered that impressionism was a movement in art in which artists, the impressionists, wanted to capture a moment in time. They were less concerned with the details of their subjects and more concerned with the light and color of the moment. They used short, quick brush strokes painting outdoor scenes, and worked quickly to capture the light before it changed. Inspired by his impressionist style and his use of monochromatic colors, 4th-grade artists created paintings using impressionist style, short, quick brushstrokes.
